The European Parliament calls for the creation of a special court for the Russian occupation of Ukraine

MEPs, in a resolution overwhelmingly approved on Thursday, demand that the Russian political and military leadership be held accountable for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

The text of the resolution was approved with 472 votes in favor, 19 against and 33 abstentions.

The European Parliament says the atrocities committed by Russian forces in Bucha, Irpin and many other Ukrainian cities reveal the brutality of war and underline the importance of coordinated international action to bring those responsible to justice under international law.

MEPs also call on the EU in close cooperation with Ukraine and the international community to push for the creation of a special international court to prosecute the political and military leadership of Russia and its allies.

Creating a court, MEPs argue, would fill a gap in international criminal justice and complement the investigative efforts of the International Criminal Court, which currently cannot investigate the crime of aggression when it comes to Ukraine.

The political and military leadership of Russia and Belarus must be held accountable.

MEPs stress that it should have jurisdiction to investigate not only Vladimir Putin and Russia's political and military leadership, but also Alexander Lukashenko and his associates in Belarus.

MEPs emphasize that it is no longer possible for the Russian Federation under Putin's leadership to return to business as usual with the West.
