Erion Veliaj seeks release from prison, appeals to the Supreme Court

Erion Veliaj has appealed to the High Court, where he appealed the decision of the Special Court of First Instance and Appeals, which left him in prison, accepting the requests of SPAK.

Veliaj is requesting a change to the security measure of "prison arrest", as it is learned that the appeal was submitted by lawyers via mail.

Erion Veliaj was arrested at noon on February 10 at the Municipality of Tirana, while after a 1-year investigation, SPAK has filed charges for committing the criminal offenses of "Passive corruption of high-ranking state officials or local elected officials", committed in collaboration (9 times) and "Laundering of the proceeds of a criminal offense or criminal activity".

Following the Appeals Court's decision, Erion Veliaj was also charged with introducing prohibited items into detention cells, after he was wiretapped and made phone calls on the cell phone of one of the prison officers while he was in the van to be transferred to prison.

The SPAK investigation has revealed that Erion Veliaj and Ajola Xoxa have created a scheme to benefit from bribes for personal enrichment through a number of organizations and companies controlled by them or their relatives and have benefited from at least 1.1 million euros in nine cases. Veliaj is accused of having benefited from three villas in a tourist village in Qerret, while Xoxa is accused of having spent around 800 thousand euros on online purchases, which he did not declare in his annual declarations.

Businessmen Elman Abule, Gentian Sula, Shkëlqim Fusha, Fatmir Bektashi, Meriman Palushi and Sokol Kryeziu, in exchange for tenders from the Municipality of Tirana and construction permits, offered Erion Veliaj monetary sums through fictitious purchases, plane tickets, sponsorships, Ajola Xoxa's NGOs, as well as real estate, such as several villas in Qerret.
