HISTORY/ Vinicius Junior and the youngest captains of Real Madrid

Vinicius Junior will never forget the Copa del Rey semi-final against Sociedad in San Sebastian. In the match on February 26, the Brazilian held the Real Madrid captain's armband for the first time, at the age of 24. Since arriving in the Spanish capital in 2018, the winger has made 298 appearances for Madrid, winning several trophies, including two Champions Leagues.

"It's something very special to be able to play here for so long and at the age of 24 to play my first match as captain. It's very special for me and my family, after everything we've gone through to get here," he explained on Realmadrid TV.

At the age of 24, Vinicius becomes one of the few Real players to hold the armband of “Los Blancos” at a young age. Since Wednesday, February 26, he has been included in a select list of Real captains. These are some of the cases of players who have won the armband at a young age.

JOSE MARIA KASTEL –  He won the first captaincy of Real Madrid in 1914, at just 18 years old. Until then, no player so young had been captain. He retired to devote himself to his profession as an architect.

JOSE GIRALT –  Better known as “Patache”. He was a striker from Cuba who took over as captain in 1902, when he was 19 years old. He played alongside his brothers Mario and Armando. He managed to win the Copa del Rey on two occasions with Real.

FEDERICO REVUELTO –  Like Giralt, he was a Guatemalan striker who became the second foreigner to be Real Madrid's first captain, after José Giralt. He held the captain's armband between 1903 and 1904, when he was 20 years old. He won the 1908 Copa del Rey with a goal of his own.

SANTIAGO BERNABEU –  The Real Madrid legend was a player for the white club before serving as president. In 1916, at the age of 21, he first wore the armband. He did so until 1920, when he had to leave for Oviedo for work reasons.

PARAKET ESCOBAL –  He was from La Rioja (one of the most famous wine-producing areas in Spain) and played as a central defender alongside Quesada, forming one of the best duos of the time. He was the leader of “Los Blancos” since 1924, when he was only 21 years old. He was part of the Spanish expedition to the Paris Olympics.

RAUL GONZALEZ –  Raul's case is special. As the years passed and football evolved, captains became more and more experienced players. However, the former white number '7' was only named captain at the age of 26. After the Copa del Rey semi-final, Vinicius has now joined a special club of Real Madrid's youngest captains.
