Manchester United owner Jim Ratcliffe loses a quarter of his fortune

Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United and owner of OGC Nice, has lost a quarter of his wealth over the past year, according to the Sunday Times billionaires list.
Ratcliffe, 72, has seen his fortune fall from £23.519 billion (€27.90 billion) to £17.046 billion (€20.24 billion), dropping him from fourth to seventh place on the list of the UK's richest people.
Ratcliffe, owner of the chemical company INEOS, one of the world's largest, bought 27.7% of Man.United's shares in December 2023, in a deal worth 1.25 billion pounds (1.48 billion euros) and, since then, has implemented a policy of cuts within the club to stop the financial drain, with losses in the last five years and the alleged threat of bankruptcy this year.
To mitigate this, Man.United has laid off more than 400 staff last year, increased ticket prices at Old Trafford, stripped employees of their right to eat at the club and removed their all-expenses-paid travel bonus to the team's finals.
Despite this, the club spent around £15 million on Erik Ten Hag's termination payment and the cost of hiring Dan Ashworth as sporting director for six months.
