Scandal at Ajax, the chief executive is fired
Another scandal at Ajax Amsterdam. If during the glorious history, the Dutch club has taught us with countless trophies and successes, in recent years, the Archers have returned to the home of scandals. After the dismissal of Marc Overmars and Sven Mislintat, Alex Kroes is the next sacked.

Chief executive Alex Kroes has been suspended by Ajax's supervisory board over allegations of insider trading. In a statement, the club's board claims Kroes bought more than 17,000 shares in the club a week before his appointment was announced on 2 August.

The board said it sought outside legal advice that "indicates he is likely to be involved in insider trading". Ajax say they intend to offload the 50-year-old Dutchman.

Kroes, who has only been in the job for two weeks, said he would seek a judgment on his purchases from the Dutch financial watchdog AFM and did not accept the board's decision.

He said he had bought shares in the club in stages from April 2022 to July 2023, stopping after his appointment at Ajax was confirmed "to avoid any misunderstanding".

Kroes added that he bought the shares "out of faith in the club." Not to make a quick buck" and had "provided full disclosure" to the supervisory board about his assets.

Shareholders will hear details about Kroes' intended dismissal at an extraordinary general meeting, where the supervisory board will then have the final say on his future.

Despite being appointed in August, Kroes only started his job last month due to a non-compete clause in his contract at former club AZ Alkmaar, where he was director of international football strategy.

The former Ajax youth player succeeds Edwin van der Sar, who resigned at the end of last season after the team finished third in the Dutch league and failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009 .

Ajax is currently in fifth place in the Eredivisie, 28 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven and this season participation in the Champions League is an almost impossible objective, because Twente and AZ Alkmaar, respectively in 3rd and 4th place have significant points advantage over the 36-time champions.
