Dressed as Bin Laden at a party, referee suspended

Australian Football League (AFL) referee Leigh Haussen will not officiate any opening week matches of next season (which starts in March 2025) due to "inappropriate behaviour".

The federation announced the decision on Monday and the reason is truly unbelievable. Haussen wore a costume as Osama bin Laden, the founder of the militant group al-Qaeda, killed in 2011 by US special forces.

He had done so during an end-of-season Australian football umpires party. The theme of the evening, held in the private room of a Melbourne restaurant, was "characters of the 2000s".

The suit was "inappropriate, offensive and in poor taste", according to the federation, while Haussen apologized: "I'm sorry, I made an error of judgement, I didn't mean to offend anyone".

To be precise, Haussen is a referee in a sport that mixes rugby and football, very popular in Australia, which is run by the AFL.
