France rescues 157 migrants on dangerous crossing to Britain

French authorities have rescued 157 migrants who were trying to cross the English Channel and the North Sea in small boats to reach the UK.
Rescue operations began in the early hours of the morning after port services received information about a large group of people gathered on a beach on the northern coast of France, ready to set off for British shores.
According to French maritime authorities, several people were rescued near Calais, while other interventions took place at various points along the coast. In one case, dozens of migrants on a boat were rescued and returned to land, while in another operation, authorities evacuated dozens of people from a vessel in difficulty.
Attempts to illegally cross into Britain remain a major challenge for French and British authorities, despite increased security measures. In April, the two countries reached a new three-year agreement aimed at curbing illegal immigration across the English Channel, providing for increased funding for checks and patrols.
However, the route remains one of the most dangerous for migrants. According to data published by international media, at least 29 people lost their lives during 2025 trying to cross the English Channel, while at least eight more victims have been recorded since the beginning of this year.
