Questions after the fire that caused fear among residents and vacationers in
"We saw the fire from where we are standing and the helicopter. It was scary."

Almost every year, for a decade in a row, the tranquility of local residents and tourists resting on the coast of Shengjin continues to be disturbed by the fires that continue to engulf the crown of pines above the city.

The fire first came to life in the hills above the military ward near some apartments and hotels part of Rana i Hedhun. A helicopter and many fire engines could not control the situation, due to the strong northerly winds. In less than two hours the fire spread all over the hill above the town very close to the dwellings.

But before it got out of control threatening everyone, the fires had been burning pine logs and bushes for at least three days in limited hearths.

"Three days ago, I personally tried to react modestly, to sensitize... also encouraged by the snows that asked for help so that the government would intervene. If it was intervened three days ago, we would not have this situation", said the democratic deputy Gjekmarkaj.

The reaction was slow, while the residents of the area complain that the fire brigade was uncoordinated and mostly works with "friends".

"This also happened 5 years ago. We don't know if it is intentional or unintentional," says a resident. At 17:00 on Thursday afternoon, the situation became chaotic as smoke covered the city and the fire reached the houses above the road. Two Italian planes were decisive in containing the fire that almost destroyed an entire city. Meanwhile, it is certain that the arson in Shengjin continues to remain a "crime without punishment".

"Just last night, surprisingly, at 2 o'clock in the morning, four more fires were activated in Tresh, Kolsh, Dajç and Raboshte. Strangely from 2 o'clock to three o'clock in the morning 4 fires... this shows that we are dealing with an alarm. Someone is taking this story seriously. This is a reason to go deeper", said the Mayor, Pjerin Ndreu.

A large part of the crown of pines above the city was burned, and also the forest on the banks of Rana i Hedhun, one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the country. Locals believe that the fire was deliberately set first in the area of Rana i Hedhun and then spread and went out of control due to strong winds, not sparing the coastline and the resorts built along it.

About 60 percent of the tourists left overnight, leaving the city in the hands of firefighters, soldiers and Civil Emergency personnel.

"Burnt umbrellas and sunbeds, turned into piles of coals and workers trying to replace them with new ones." This is the situation in Shengjin, 24 hours after the flames didn't even spare the coastline, forcing tourists to leave and leaving significant economic damage behind.

For Burimi and Fitore, who came from Prishtina, this end of July should have marked the first day of summer vacation, but the flames that engulfed the resort where the couple had booked delayed them a bit.

"We have booked in this resort here for a week. Today we came, but we found this situation like this. We spoke to the administrator and he explained what had happened. We will not rest here today as there is no electricity either. We will come back tomorrow maybe", said the tourists.

Witnessing the flames that came down from the hills of Shengjin to include the coastline of the city was the young woman Doruntinja from Kosovo. Despite the fear of the night before, she has returned to continue her vacation at one of the other resorts of Rana i Hedhun.

"We saw the fire from where we are standing and the helicopter. It was scary. We were scared, but today we are still here today", declared Ajp.

As the hours pass, although fewer in number... other vacationers continue to give life to tourism in Lezha.
"We have been coming here for years. We started the holidays four days ago. Yesterday we witnessed the flames of the fire. It was scary. But today we came back anyway".

The entrepreneurs in the area experienced the flames that threatened their hotels with even more fear.

"There was a very strong wind, which helped the fire to spread at an extremely high speed. Everything happened within seconds, it was impossible to know where the fire was coming from. It was a chaotic situation. I have been here for eight years and something like this has never happened before," says administrator Ilir Koprani.

Apart from vacationers, the flames of the fires caused fear to the point of panic among the residents of Shengjin. A day later, the smell of burning continues to feel heavy as the pine logs turned into coals continue to burn quietly.

For almost two decades, Shengjin has become the main destination for vacationers from Kosovo. Being the closest destination to Kosovo, the city has undergone a great development in recent years. Unlike other tourist cities, Shengjini has invested in infrastructure and has a very good management of vehicle traffic, people movement and waste management.

The city is expanding with hotels in its two suburbs. From the south towards Kuna, above-average level hotels with 4 and 5 stars have been built, while in the area of Rana i Hedhun there is a project to build luxury resorts.

Shengjini has a different offer for many levels, offering very economical prices in both hotels and restaurants as well as luxury services, competing with the south of the country. But this year, the fire severely damaged tourism at its peak./ A2CNN
