Declared "non grata" in Greece, journalist Artan Hoxha reveals the reason for the decision of the Greek authorities

Journalist Artan Hoxha has been detained at the Greek border and declared persona non grata, with the official justification that he poses a "threat to public order and security."
Invited to Çim Peka Live on SYRI TV, Hoxha said that the real reason lies behind his professional work and public stances in defense of Albanian national interests.
The incident occurred on the 23rd of this month at the border crossing near Ioannina, where Hoxha was crossing to Greece. After an initial check, he was sent for further verifications, where his fingerprints were taken and his retina was scanned. At the end of the procedures, he was informed of the decision to declare him “non grata”, a decision that, according to the Greek authorities, had been taken during last year’s election campaign.
According to the journalist, the justification that he poses a security risk is unfounded. He emphasizes that during the conversation with the border officials, he was made to understand that the reason for this extreme measure was “his stance towards Greek interests.” Hoxha directly links this to his work as a journalist, arguing that he was penalized because of his profession and the protection of Albania’s interests.
This incident comes at a delicate diplomatic moment, just before a high-level meeting between the two countries, scheduled for June 16, where the issue of maritime space is also expected to be discussed. Hoxha says that the silence of the Albanian government may be a strategy to avoid straining relations before this important visit, especially after the cooling of relations due to the “Beleri” issue.
Calling his case “not normal” for a European Union member state, Hoxha emphasizes that this is not a personal issue, but a problem that violates press freedom and the rights of an Albanian citizen. He mentions that while Prime Minister Rama held meetings freely in Greece during the last campaign, a journalist is denied entry due to his positions.

Por si duket fushata, zgjedhjet u bënë në qershor. Ndikimi patjetër që është dhe që këtej, se ne nuk e kemi problemin thjesht me palën greke, ne kemi shqiptarët të cilët punojnë për interesa greke. Dhe ata kanë ndikimin e vet, kanë punën e vet. E kanë parë të arsyeshme...
Peka: I jeni drejtuar, i jeni drejtuar Ministrisë së Jashtme të Shqipërisë?
Hoxha: Që në momentin e parë kur unë kam dalë nga dhe më është vënë kryqi në pasaportë, kam njoftuar autoritetet tona. Kam pritur një reagim të ambasadës sonë atje. Më thanë që nuk ka ndodhur. Po ashtu më ka marrë në telefon ministrja e Jashtme dhe më ka thënë, më ka sqaruar që grekët për këto situata mbajnë një qëndrim të tillë dhe kemi ngritur një grup pune dhe shikojmë çfarë mund të bëjmë, por realisht nuk është bërë asgjë. Sepse thashë, nuk është problemi se kanë ndaluar Artan Hoxhën, punë e madhe. Por, por problemi është se kanë ndaluar një gazetar shqiptar për shkak të profesionit të tij, për shkak të punës së tij dhe thashë, mbi të gjitha unë kam mbrojtur interesat e Shqipërisë, nuk kam interesa të mia personale. Dhe ky është problem që shteti jonë nuk mundet ta kalojë këtë gjë. Meqë kemi një vizitë në datën 16 atje, dhe meqenëse do riflasim për çështjen e hapësirës territoriale detare, tani i lëmë këto situatat e tjera sikur s'ka ndodhur. Dhe vjen tek ajo shprehja e famshme që i pyesnin rumunët në kohën e Bashkimit Sovjetik që si shkoni i thanë me Bashkimin Sovjetik. Shumë mirë tha ai. U japim grurin, na marrin dhe naftën. Dhe puna jonë. Pra ne i kemi marrëdhëniet të mira kur do pala greke. Kur s'do pala greke, pra kur ne aty tregohemi gjithë servilizëm, ndodh kjo gjë. Në rast, nëse e kujton, gjatë vitit të kaluar, në zgjedhje, në fushatë, zoti Rama bëri gjithë ato takime nëpër Greqi. Pati që ta pengonte njeri atje?
Hoxha: Did anyone prevent him? No. Then why is it so difficult for the Prime Minister, in this specific case, to react because it's not just me, because there are many other Albanian citizens who return every day. But in this specific case, I said, for the reasons that I have been declared non grata, a country of the European Union is truly abnormal. And I cannot do my defense myself. The Albanian government will do it. The Albanian government does it, which in this case looks after its own interests. It reacts when it wants to and resolves it itself, when it wants to. In this specific case, it has seen fit, it is interested in that meeting on the 16th. It seems very important to re-establish contacts with the Greek side, because also because of the Beleri issue that we had problems, we had a kind of coldness with the Greek Prime Minister. In this case, Mr. Beleri is an MEP, he continues his activity there. Albania did what it did, we remember how quickly, because we also talked about SPAK a little while ago, how quickly SPAK acted. So, in the 2023 elections, Beleri, how should I say, was given permission to come to court with me and was not given permission for a minute to take the oath.
