Martin Can's killer was sentenced to 16 years in prison, family reacts: Today, our son is more alive than ever

Martin Can's family has reacted after the 16-year prison sentence of Mario Përlleshaj, their son's murderer.

They say that "for the first time we have seen a strong ray of justice."

"This decision cannot bring Martin back to us, but it gives us a deep sense that our pain was not ignored and that his life was treated with the weight and dignity it deserves," the statement said.

Adding that: " Today, Martin is more alive than ever in society's conscience."

Family statement:

Today, after a year of pain that cannot be described in words, we — Martin Can's family — have seen for the first time a strong ray of justice.

The court decided not to follow the recommendation of the Prosecution, which treated the event as a single criminal offense but clearly recognized what we have said since day one: there are TWO criminal offenses — the murder of Martin and the attempted murder of Luis.

This decision is a courageous, professional and fair act.

It's a realistic assessment of what happened: two children stabbed, two separate acts of violence, two separate criminal intents.

We thank the judges for their integrity and honesty, who chose to see the truth and not the easiest procedural path.

This decision cannot bring Martin back to us, but it gives us a deep feeling that our pain was not ignored and that his life was treated with the weight and dignity it deserves.

Today, Martin is more alive than ever in society's consciousness.
