The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal of former police officer Ludjan Zaimi, who shot and killed his colleague, Çaush Saliasi, at the police station.
On September 15, 2023, the Tirana Court found former police officer Zaimi guilty of the charge of "Murder of state police officers" and sentenced him to 35 years in prison, while in its decision, the Court of Appeal decided to change the charge to "premeditated murder", reducing the sentence by 5 years.
The serious incident occurred on May 23, 2022, at around 9:30 PM, inside the police station premises, in the briefing office, shortly before the two General Patrol officers were to take their shift. Zaimi, then a police officer, shot his colleague, Çaush Saliasi, 55, 6 times with his service weapon.
According to investigative data, 25-year-old former officer Ludjan Zaimi could not stand the mockery of his colleague Çaush Saliasi and fired his gun 6 times at his body, causing his death.
The prosecution specifies that he is charged with murder of a State Police employee, Article 79/b, and illegal possession of a weapon, after the Police announced that 56 cartridges were found on him.
Police also said at the time that the 25-year-old's home contained the antidepressant "Seroquel," a medication used to treat disorders and other serious mental problems.
"When the incident happened, I was in the yard of the police station. At that moment, Caush Saliasi was on the stairs and was rolling a cigarette. I spoke to Caush and we greeted each other. At this moment, Ludjan Zaimi came out of the classroom and came after me and I asked him how he was and why he was upset? He told me: I have nothing, but open up and move back a little.
I tell him why, but he insists and tells me again, push me, push me. At that moment he takes out his service weapon and I tell him what he is doing, but he does not turn around and heads with the weapon in his hand towards Caush Saliasi and says to the latter, "Now we will clarify together."
Immediately, Caush Saliasi stood up and entered the classroom to avoid him, but Ludian Zaimi shot him with his service weapon. Even though Caush fell to the ground, Ludian shot him again and again.
