20 US states declare state of emergency due to snowstorm

Nearly 20 US states have declared states of emergency due to the storm and blizzard.

More than 180 million people are on alert for a massive storm stretching from New Mexico to Maine and expected to paralyze the southern US with ice and snow, ABC News reports.

States of emergency have been declared by Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

The capital, Washington, which belongs to the District of Columbia, has also declared a state of emergency.

American media reports that Sunday, January 25, will be remembered as one of the days with the most flight cancellations due to weather conditions in the history of American aviation, with more than 8,000 flights already canceled.

American Airlines has canceled 37 percent of its total flights and about 85 percent of flights at New York's LaGuardia Airport have already been canceled.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is preparing resources for the storm, including prepositioning supplies and equipment, according to an internal planning document reviewed by ABC News.
