20 dead after four aid trucks overturn in Gaza

Twenty people were killed and 30 others injured after four trucks overturned in central Gaza on Tuesday, the Hamas-run civil defense agency reported.

Crowds reportedly moved towards trucks, climbing on top of them and causing drivers to lose control on the heavily damaged roads from the war, the BBC reports.

The spokesman for the Hamas-run civil defense agency in Gaza, Mahmoud Basal, said the area where the disaster occurred was under the control of the Israeli army and that the roads were damaged and dangerous.

Local journalists say the incident occurred southeast of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza shortly after 10:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

The spokesman for the Gaza Private Transport Association, Jehad Isleim, said 26 commercial trucks entered the territory on Tuesday. Twenty passed through safely, while six were looted, he said.

Four of them overturned and 10 drivers were injured, according to him.

On Tuesday, Israel announced that it would begin allowing food to enter the Strip through the private sector "to increase the volume of aid entering the Gaza Strip, reducing dependence on aid collection from the United Nations and international organizations."

Meanwhile, a senior UN official has warned of "catastrophic consequences" if Israel expands its military operations in Gaza.

The warning comes after reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking a total reconquest of the territory.

The country's army chief and other military leaders are said to oppose the strategy, and some families of hostages fear it could further endanger their loved ones.
