Endi Shabani as People's Advocate, flagrante delicto of Rama-Berisha bargains

The election of Endri Shabani as Ombudsman is a clear demonstration of the political capture of institutions through secret Rama-Berisha agreements.

The contrast between what Shabani claimed to be and what he represents today is brutal.
A few months ago, he was speaking out against the system, attacking the establishment and zealously refusing to join a third pole, describing the Euro-Atlantic Coalition and Lulzim Basha as part of the same rotten scheme. Today, without any explanation or credible political argument, it is proposed by Berisha and voted for by Rama. This kind of transformation is not political evolution, it is a compromise stripped of principles.

Neither the process nor the outcome had any element of independence. The institution of the Ombudsman, which should be inviolable from politics, was reduced to a bargaining tool. Competition was used as a facade, transparency was lacking, and the logic of merit was replaced by the arithmetic of behind-the-scenes deals.

The voting performance was a worn-out scenario: MPs who sign and then withdraw to create the next opposition smokescreen, tactical boycott to preserve the image, manufactured tension in the hall, and in the end the majority that gives the decisive votes as always. This is not an institutional procedure, it is political theater and hypocrisy.

A political hypocrisy that continues to erode the rule of law wherever it can.

The danger is clear: The Ombudsman risks turning from a defender of citizens into a legitimizing figurehead for the government. An institution created to limit state abuses now risks becoming part of the architecture of political control.

Therefore, the question is not simply rhetorical, but essential for the functioning of one of the most important institutions for the protection of citizens' rights: Will Endri Shabani be an advocate for the people or an advocate for the Rama-Berisha agreements?
