Alarm in Italy/ Three dead from botulism in Calabria and Sardinia, consumed food contaminated by street vendors
Italian health authorities have been on high alert after a botulism outbreak that has killed three people and sickened dozens more in two regions. The epicenter of the outbreak in Calabria was Diamante, a resort town on the Tyrrhenian coast, where two people have died in recent days and more than 12 are being treated in a hospital in Cosenza, two of whom are in serious condition.
The third case involves a 38-year-old woman in Sardinia, who first showed symptoms in late July after eating guacamole at a festival in Montserrat, near Cagliari. The woman was hospitalized in critical condition, initially at the Brotzu hospital and later transferred to Businco, where she died.
The Italian Ministry of Health immediately activated all the health mechanisms foreseen in the two regions to ensure the rapid administration of antidotes to patients. The head of the prevention, research and emergencies department, Maria Rosaria Campitiello, underlined that the immediate response was made possible thanks to the network of the National Strategic Stock of Antidotes and Medicines and the collaboration of all the bodies involved.
The Public Prosecutor's Office of Paola has already launched a criminal investigation into the poisoning case in Calabria, focusing, among other things, on the speed and quality of the medical response. Three people have been arrested, facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, negligent bodily harm and disposal of harmful food.
This concerns the street vendor who allegedly sold contaminated food from his food truck, as well as the legal representatives of two companies that supplied the raw materials. Doctors are also being investigated for their reactions after patients were hospitalized.
Initial indications indicate that all victims and patients had consumed sausage and broccoli sandwiches from the same vendor.
His vehicle was seized, while investigations revealed that he had been exposed to the sun all day, a condition that probably favored the development of toxins in improperly stored foods. Laboratory tests are being carried out by the Cosenza Health Department and local police.
