The French political scientist who praised the leaders of Hamas is arrested

Francois Burgat, a well-known political scientist in France who supports the Gaza cause, was detained for "supporting terrorism". His arrest caused a strong reaction in the country.

The European Jewish Organization filed a complaint against Burgat, an expert on the Arab world and Islamophobia. Burgat, 76, called his arrest scandalous. 

Vincent Geisser, director of research at the National Science Center in Paris, called the arrest "disgraceful", saying it was like a "witch hunt". Mentioning Burgat's 40 years in the service of the French Republic, Geisser called on all his colleagues to express "individual or collective solidarity".

Burgat has openly expressed his support for Gaza and said in a post on X earlier this year that he has "infinitely more respect and appreciation for the leaders of Hamas than the leaders of the state of Israel."

He has also criticized France's stance on Hamas, calling it a capitulation to US and Israeli policy.
