Austria reports 26 avalanche deaths

A total of 26 people have died in avalanches in Austria so far, the Austrian Board of Administrators for Alpine Safety announced today, significantly above the long-term average.
The period between February 15 and 24 proved particularly deadly, recording 14 fatalities.
The agency said that accidents during particularly critical mountain conditions occur repeatedly.
"Although warnings are issued for these avalanche conditions and the increased avalanche risk is well known, personal risk management appears to be failing for some people," the agency said.
After an initially snow-poor winter, the avalanche risk has increased significantly in recent weeks and remains considerable in the Tyrol and Vorarlberg regions.
Authorities urged extreme caution for those venturing off the secured slopes.
For victims or their families, recovery operations can be costly.
In Austria, air rescue services, mountain rescue teams and often the alpine police usually charge a fee for their services.
Deploying a rescue helicopter costs on average between 5,000 and 6,000 euros for a 40-minute mission.
