The Illuminati was originally a secret society formed in Bavaria, present-day Germany, and existed from 1776 to 1785. The group was inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment, and was founded by law professor Adam Weisshopf.
He aimed to promote rational education, philanthropy, and to oppose superstition and religious influence in society. He also attempted to change the way states were run in Europe, eliminating the influence of religion on government, and giving the people a new source of “enlightenment.”
It is believed that the first meeting of the Bavarian Illuminati was held in a forest near Ingolstadt on May 1, 1776. There, five men drew up the rules that would govern the secret society. The group's main goals were to influence political decisions and disrupt institutions such as the monarchy and the Church.
The Freemasons are an organization originally composed of stonemasons and cathedral builders of the Middle Ages. In some countries, especially the United States, there has historically been much paranoia about the Freemasons.
