Nesta: "Milan, what confusion: we need a sports director and a striker. Italian youth? We raise farm chickens"

Italian football legend Alessandro Nesta has shared his deep thoughts on the current state of Italian football, both national and Serie A, as well as the situation of his beloved club, Milan.
During an event in New York, where he signed shirts for Italian fans, Nesta reflected on nostalgia for the generation of 2006 and the challenges facing Italian football today.
He emphasized the strong bond of the Italian community in North America, expressing that he was not surprised by their warmth, having lived and played there.
His presence, along with other legends like Pirlo, was a "mandatory act" after the World Cup disappointment, answering the call of president Infantino.
Nesta explained why their 2006 generation still remains dear to Italians, stressing that there has been a huge gap behind them, with the exception of the success at the European Championship. He described his generation as “extraordinary” in that they managed to win, while today iconic players are missing and poor results affect the public’s judgment. According to him, this situation is the result of several combined factors. Italy has lost its identity, “copying” others, while clubs have shown a lack of interest in young people. He added that societies are not protected, as they invest years in developing young players, only to see them leave without proper compensation. To support youth academies, Nesta stressed the need for new protective laws.
Another strong criticism of Nesta was related to the methodology of youth training. He argued that players should be given the freedom to express themselves, while today there is too much tactics, even at the age of 12-13, when in fact individual genius and skills such as dribbling should be developed. “Today, let me say, we raise farm chickens, all the same, good at passing, but without creativity,” Nesta said, using a strong metaphor to emphasize the uniformity and lack of individuality in the development of young players.
This problem, according to Nesta, is also reflected in Serie A, where the most recognizable faces in the world still remain those of his generation. He noted that the Italian championship has failed to renew itself, losing its appeal to strong players who once dreamed of playing in Serie A. “We have not managed to build a League that walks on its own two feet, we are spoiled children of families like Berlusconi, Moratti, Sensi,” said Nesta, highlighting the lack of evolution in infrastructure and stadiums, unlike other European championships.
Turning to Milan, Nesta admitted that coach Max Allegri had his responsibilities, as did the players, but the club's main problem was "great internal confusion". However, he expressed confidence that it is not difficult to sort things out, stressing that "it is not difficult to restructure a club if you put the right people in the right roles, with clear tasks and responsibilities". As for Zlatan Ibrahimovic's role as a manager, Nesta, who has had a good relationship with the Swede, said he could not judge him in that capacity, but stressed that "the order that a club needs has to come from the top".
Regarding Milan's needs in the transfer market, Nesta was firm: "Absolutely a great center forward." He believes that the base of the team is already strong, with great potential, mentioning a good goalkeeper, the growth of Pavlovic and a good midfield, but everything depends on the summer moves. Regarding the new direction of Milan, Nesta stressed that everything must start from the sporting director. "With a capable sporting director, who chooses a good coach according to his taste and together they define a line to achieve results, they can succeed even in a short time." As for the predictions for the championship, Nesta sees Inter ahead, while a properly restructured Milan can immediately see second, with Napoli to watch. Finally, for the World Cup, he predicted a France-Spain final.
