PHOTOS/ Wonderful views of Earth from space, Artemis 2 team halfway to the Moon, first images from the crew released
The Artemis 2 mission crew has released spectacular images of Earth, taken from aboard the Orion spacecraft, as it continues its historic journey to the Moon and back.
The high-resolution photographs, taken by Commander Reid Wiseman, show our planet in rare detail – continents, oceans and clouds in vibrant colors, as well as auroras visible near the poles.
The Artemis 2 mission has reached another historic milestone, as the four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft have traveled halfway between the Earth and the Moon.
According to NASA, the capsule is now more than 219,000 kilometers from Earth and is on track for a lunar flyby scheduled for Monday. This is the first crewed mission to the Moon since Apollo 17.

The US space agency has also released the first images from the spacecraft, taken by Commander Reid Wiseman. The photos show Earth as a bright arc in the darkness of space, as well as a full view of the globe with oceans, clouds and a green aurora shining near the poles.
Also participating in this mission are Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. They are the first astronauts to travel to the Moon in more than half a century.

The crew has already entered a so-called "free return" trajectory, using the Moon's gravity to orbit it and then return to Earth without the need for additional major maneuvers.

The astronauts are expected to travel about 6,400 kilometers beyond the Moon, providing never-before-seen views of its far side. If the mission is successful, they will set a new record, becoming the furthest humans have traveled from Earth in history.
The mission is part of NASA's long-term program to return humanity to the Moon and build a sustainable presence, as a first step towards deeper exploration in space.
