Christian Stoker sworn in as Austria's new chancellor, will lead

Christian Stocker, leader of the conservative People's Party (ÖVP) in Austria, was sworn in as the country's chancellor today (March 3), leading the first three-party government since World War II, while the far-right Freedom Party is in opposition.

Stocker's swearing-in ceremony took place in the presence of President Alexander Van der Bellen, with the remaining members of the government taking the oath.

Stoker's center-right People's Party (ÖVP), the center-left Social Democrats (SPÖ) and the liberal Neos reached an agreement last week after their first attempt to form a coalition failed in January.

Members of Neo's base voted overwhelmingly in favor of the coalition deal with the other two parties on Sunday, removing the final hurdle for the trio to take office.

SPÖ leader Andreas Bäbler was sworn in as vice-chancellor.

But who is Christian Stocker?

He previously served as deputy mayor of the small town of Wiener Neustadt and is considered a high-level politician.

Earlier, three centrist parties announced that they had reached an agreement to form a new government.

The coalition consists of the conservative People's Party (ÖVP), the center-left Social Democrats (SPÖ) and the liberal Neos.

The pro-Russian right-wing populist Freedom Party (FPÖ), despite winning the most votes, was excluded from the coalition.

The new government plans to increase the country's defense budget.
