Denmark heads to snap election after tensions with US over Greenland

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has announced the holding of early parliamentary elections on March 24, several months ahead of the regular deadline, in a tense political climate following the clash with the US over the Greenland issue.
Voters will elect 179 members of the Danish parliament, the Folketing. Of these, 175 seats belong to electoral districts in Denmark, while four seats are divided between representatives of Greenland and the Faroe Islands, autonomous territories of the Kingdom of Denmark.
"The direction Denmark will take in the next four years depends on you," Frederiksen told MPs during the announcement of the elections.
By law, elections must be held at least every four years, but the prime minister has the right to call them at any time. The last elections were held in November 2022 and produced a three-party coalition that united forces from the left and right.
Frederiksen, in power since 2019, currently heads a coalition government with the Liberal Party, led by Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, and the centrist Moderate Party, led by Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
