Europe responds to US: 2027 deadline to take over NATO leadership is unrealistic

Washington has caused strong reactions in European capitals after the publication of the new US national security strategy document, which calls for Europe to fully take over the burden of defense by 2027. The request has been described in the EU as "completely unrealistic", while the description of the EU in the US report as a continent in "decline" has been assessed by many capitals as "insulting and dangerous".

The European Commission chose a restrained tone. A spokeswoman for the institution stated that the Commission “has just become aware of the publication of the report” and that “it will officially comment once the document has been examined.”

The most immediate reaction came from Berlin. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that topics such as freedom of expression and the functioning of free societies “cannot be discussed by Washington.”

"No one has to give us advice on issues that are clearly regulated by our constitutions," he said.

Even those close to French President Emmanuel Macron reacted sharply, expressing “deep concern” over the US administration’s statements. His political group in the European Parliament, Renew Europe, criticized the document, saying it “weakens Western unity in the face of Russian aggression” and “ignores the sacrifices that Europe makes every day to protect democratic security.”

Valérie Hayer, the president of Renew, who has just returned from a visit to Washington, said she has noticed “a huge gap between the White House and American lawmakers.” According to her, “President Trump is isolating himself from his experts and relying on a narrow circle of advisors.”

Belgian socialist MEP Kathleen Van Brempt declared that the US is "not behaving like an ally" and called on the EU "to no longer allow Trump's pressures."

Meanwhile, French presidential candidate Raphael Glucksmann said the document shows that Trump "despises the EU, supports the far right and will take no action to help Europe against Putin."

According to Reuters sources, the US has asked allies to take control of most conventional defense capabilities. Diplomatic sources within the EU emphasize that Europe is increasing military spending, with the objective of member countries reaching the level of 3.5% of GDP by 2035, as well as an additional increase of 1.5% for other related investments.

“Even the 2030 deadline is a big challenge for us,” the source said. “To demand a complete transformation within two years is simply unrealistic.”
