France ends wild animal shows in circuses

France has banned wild animals in circuses, ending shows featuring tigers, lions and bears.

Under comprehensive animal rights legislation, wild animal shows are banned, while their ownership is illegal.

The law also prohibits live dolphin shows.

President Emmanuel Macron's party called the legislation "a historic step in the battle for animal rights."

In addition to measures affecting circuses, the new law increases the maximum penalty for animal abuse to five years in prison and a 75,000 euro fine, and tightens restrictions on the sale of pets.

The new law also bans the use of wild animals in television shows, nightclubs and private parties.

Polls showed that a majority of French people supported the law, and dozens of cities have already banned circuses that use animals.

These changes put France in line with over 20 European countries that have already banned or restricted the use of animals for entertainment.
