France leads EU asylum requests in February

The number of new asylum applications in Germany was lower than in other European Union countries for the first time in several months, ranking behind France and Spain in February, according to the latest data.
“A total of 12,775 asylum applications were filed in Germany in February, followed by France with 13,080 and Spain with 12,975,” according to the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). In 2024, Germany registered a total of 250,615 asylum applications, Spain 166,175 and Italy 158,605.
In March, the number of asylum applications filed in Germany fell to 10,647, a decrease of 19.7% compared to the previous month and 45.3% on the same month last year – due to a sharp drop in applications from migrants from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey.
