Germany, commitment to EU membership of Western Balkan countries

Germany will continue to be firmly committed to the Berlin Process and the EU membership of the six Western Balkan countries.

The German Embassy in Tirana announced today that, about six weeks after the Bundestag elections, the CDU, CSU and SPD parties have reached an agreement to form a new federal government and have agreed on a joint governing program.

But before CDU leader Friedrich Merz can be elected chancellor, the deal must be approved within the parties: SPD members will vote, the CDU will hold a small party conference, and the CSU executive committee will decide.

The coalition agreement emphasizes that Germany will continue to be firmly committed to the Berlin Process and the EU membership of the six Western Balkan countries. Through a differentiated and performance-based approach, the individual progress of the candidate countries will be further assessed, the German embassy announced.
