Meta will block live broadcasts of minors on Instagram

Meta will expand protection for teenagers on Instagram by blocking live streaming. From now on, young people under the age of 16 will be prohibited from using Instagram's Live feature unless they have their parents' permission.

They will also need parental permission to disable a feature that blurs images in their direct messages that may contain nudity.

The changes, the Guardian reports, were announced alongside the expansion of Instagram's teen account system to Facebook and Messenger.

Teen accounts were introduced last year and are the default for under-18s in a setting that allows parents to set daily time limits for app usage, prevent teens from using Instagram during certain times, and view the accounts their child is messaging.

Teen accounts on Facebook and Messenger will initially be available in the US, UK, Australia and Canada.

As with Instagram accounts, users under 16 will need their parents' permission to change settings.

According to Meta, teen Instagram accounts are used by 54 million people under 18 worldwide, with more than 90% of 13- to 15-year-olds keeping the default restrictions.
