The German parliament has passed a new law that suspends family reunification for refugees who do not have full asylum status for two years, Deutsche Welle reported .
The decision affects those who have received so-called "subsidiary protection," a form of protection granted to people who do not meet the conditions for asylum but who cannot be deported due to danger in their country of origin.
The bill was proposed by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt from the Christian Social Union (CSU) and was approved by 444 votes in favor and 135 against in the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament.
This is an attempt by Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government to tighten immigration policies. The far-right AfD party also supported this initiative.
