A federal judge has ordered Elon Musk and his government efficiency department, Doge, to stop dismantling USAid, saying their move to quickly shut down the agency is likely illegal.

Judge Theodore D. Chuang said the court found that the defendants' actions taken to close USAID on an expedited basis, including its apparent decision to permanently close USAID headquarters, likely violated the United States Constitution in multiple ways, media reports said.

He added that these actions also harmed not only the plaintiffs but also the public interest because they deprived them of their authority in Congress. The judge ordered Musk and Doge officials to stop any work aimed at shutting down USAid, restore email access to all USAid employees and contractors, and not publicly disclose any personal information of employees.

He also said that Musk and Doge have two weeks to either prove that USAid's Washington, D.C. headquarters has reopened or for a senior USAid official to agree to close it.
