Horror in Rome/ Elderly woman killed at home with a hammer, nephew arrested: I couldn't stand it anymore that my family made fun of me

An elderly woman was killed with a hammer in her apartment in Ostia. Police have detained her 30-year-old nephew, who was caught at a metro station. The alarm was raised at around 08:30, when neighbours, after hearing screams, called 112. When they arrived, the police found the 80-year-old woman lying in a pool of blood.

The 30-year-old's mother's partner was also injured. The young man, who tried to leave by subway, was stopped a few minutes later. The motive for the attack remains to be clarified.

The scene of this serious crime was the elderly woman's apartment, where the young man had arrived at around 08:30 in the morning. The dynamics of the event are still unclear, but according to the reconstruction made by Criminal Police investigators, the 30-year-old collided with the victim, hitting her with a hammer, possibly after a fight.

The boy's mother's partner was also present in the apartment. He was in bed, sleeping, but was awakened by the screams. The victim's son-in-law tried to restrain the young man during the attack, but was unsuccessful. The 59-year-old was injured and was forced to run from the apartment to escape the aggression and seek help.

Bloodied and barefoot, due to a head wound, he managed to reach a bar across from the apartment, where he received first aid from the people there. Law enforcement was immediately notified.

Before the police arrived, the 30-year-old tried to escape. He walked to the Acilia railway station and boarded the Ostia Lido–Rome train. Investigators immediately monitored the location signal of his phone. After being stopped, he was escorted to the police car; during the operation he did not resist and refused to speak.

The suspect then gave his version, saying: "I couldn't stand my family making fun of me anymore." A vague statement, while his past does not show any medical documents for psychiatric problems. However, investigators are analyzing the 30-year-old's past, which resulted in several reports of drug use. Another lead being investigated is that of conflicts over money.
