Warned not to import Russian oil, Trump imposes additional 25% tariff on India

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday imposing an additional 25% tariff on products imported from India, on the grounds that the country has imported, directly or indirectly, oil from Russia.
This move constitutes a direct "punishment" by Trump against India for its trade and geopolitical practices, bringing the total level of tariffs on Indian products to 50%.
In his justification for this decision, Trump stated:
“I have received additional information from senior officials regarding the actions of the government of the Russian Federation regarding the situation in Ukraine. After reviewing this information, I assess that the national emergency, as described in Executive Order 14066, remains in effect. The policies and actions of the Russian government remain an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”
Trump further added that, to respond to this state of emergency, it is necessary to impose an additional tariff on products imported from India – due to its direct or indirect ties to Russian oil.
The decision comes at a time when international tensions remain high over the war in Ukraine and the role of third countries in supplying energy resources from Russia is under constant scrutiny by the United States. India, however, has maintained a cautious stance on sanctions against Russia and has continued energy cooperation with Moscow.
