Iran rejects nuclear talks if US demands halt to uranium enrichment

Iran will not participate in negotiations over its nuclear program if the United States insists on halting uranium enrichment, Ali Akbar Velayati, an adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Wednesday.

"If the cessation of uranium enrichment is set as a condition for negotiations, then it is certain that they will not take place," he declared during a meeting with Pakistan's Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, according to the Iranian state news agency IRNA.

Iran and the US have held five rounds of talks since April, mediated by Oman. But the dialogue was suspended after Israel's attack on Iran on June 13, which led to a 12-day escalation of violence, now known as the "12-day war."

A meeting planned between Iranian and US delegations for June 15 was canceled due to the conflict.

Despite the tensions, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reaffirmed the country's commitment to the diplomatic path. In an official statement published on the presidency's website, he stressed: "We continue to believe that the window of diplomacy remains open and we will pursue this peaceful path with seriousness."

Iran has not ruled out the possibility of returning to the negotiating table with the US. However, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei, no date or location has currently been agreed upon for a possible meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US special envoy Steve Witkoff.
