Israel strikes building near Lebanese government headquarters in Beirut

Israel carried out an airstrike on Thursday in central Beirut, hitting a building in an area very close to Lebanon's government headquarters.

The airstrike, which occurred at around 5:30 p.m., hit a building in the Bachoura neighborhood, about one kilometer from the Grand Serail, which serves as the headquarters of the Lebanese government.

Before the strike, the Israeli army had issued a warning to residents of the area, asking them to leave because, according to it, there was a facility linked to the Hezbollah organization near the building.

According to Israeli authorities, the operation is part of an offensive against Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran.

Israel launched an air and ground offensive against Hezbollah last week after the Lebanese organization launched attacks on Israel on March 2, saying it was avenging the assassination of the Iranian supreme leader at the start of the war between the United States, Israel and Iran.

Since then, Hezbollah has launched daily rockets and drones into Israeli territory, including one of the largest barrages of attacks on Wednesday evening, which was followed by powerful Israeli strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Hundreds of casualties and mass evacuations

According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli attacks have hit hard the south and east of Lebanon, as well as the southern suburbs of the capital, causing over 600 casualties.

At the same time, the Israeli army has ordered mass evacuations in these areas, forcing more than 800,000 people to leave their homes.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the army has received instructions to expand operations into Lebanese territory.

"We have promised peace and security for communities in the north and we will deliver on this," he said during a meeting with senior military leaders.
