Japan/ Medical helicopter crashes in sea area in Nagasaki, 3 dead

An ambulance helicopter in Japan has crashed into the sea while transporting a patient. According to foreign media, three of the six people on board have died.

Pilot Hiroshi Hamada, 66-year-old Katsuto Yoshitake, a helicopter mechanic, and 28-year-old nurse Sakura Kunitake were rescued by the coast guard after they were found in the water clinging to their life jackets.

"All three suffered hypothermia, as their body temperatures dropped abnormally, but they were conscious," said a coast guard official, speaking on condition of anonymity in accordance with regulations.

The bodies of 34-year-old doctor Kei Arakawa, 86-year-old patient Mitsuki Motoishi, and her caregiver Kazuyoshi Motoishi, 68, were found dead hours later after the crash by a Japan Air Self-Defense Force helicopter.

The Coast Guard deployed two aircraft and three ships to the area as part of the rescue operation. The cause of the accident remains unclear.
