Donald Trump opened Hanukkah celebrations at the White House by sending "love and prayers" to the people of Australia following the terrorist attack on Sydney's Bondi Beach.

The US president has called on nations to unite against radical Islam after the Islamic State-inspired terrorist attack in Sydney that killed 15 people and injured 25 others.

"Let me take a moment to send the love and prayers of our nation as a whole to the people of Australia and especially to all those affected by the horrific and anti-Semitic terrorist attack," Trump said in his speech.

"We are all united in mourning for those who were killed and we pray for a speedy recovery for the injured; some are very seriously injured," he added.

Finally, he pledged to always support the Jewish people and stressed that all nations must stand together against the evil forces of radical Islamic terrorism.

Three days after the Islamic State-inspired attack on a gathering for the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah on Sydney's world-famous Bondi Beach, 22 injured people are still being treated in hospitals, New South Wales state health authorities announced.

Specifically, nine of the patients remained in critical condition as of this morning, while 13 others were in serious but stable condition.
