Mickovski re-elected for the third time as leader of VMRO-DPMNE

Christian Mickovski was re-elected as leader of VMRO-DPMNE during the party's congress in the city of Kavadarci, thus starting his third term as leader of this party, which is the largest on the right spectrum.
Mickovski was the only candidate for the presidency of VMRO-DPMNE and was unanimously re-elected by around 800 party delegates.
During his speech at the congress, he focused particularly on the country's European path, which remains stalled due to disputes with Bulgaria, accusing the European Union of lacking the ability to provide a solution.
"Serious challenges await us. We have an open issue with Bulgaria, but it seems that there is no interlocutor on the other side. We want to reach a fair solution, but for any agreement I want to know, unlike my predecessors in the government, what Macedonia and its citizens gain from this."
"The European Union seems unprepared to facilitate this process, mainly due to its own internal problems," said the leader of VMRO-DPMNE, who has also been the Prime Minister of North Macedonia since June 2024.
Mickovski was first elected chairman of VMRO-DPMNE in December 2017, replacing his political mentor, Nikola Gruevski, who almost a year later fled to Hungary, where he received political asylum from his ally Viktor Orban, to avoid a two-year sentence for a corruption case while he was Prime Minister of North Macedonia (2006-2016).
In recent years, Christian Mitkovski has distanced himself from Nikola Gruevski.
