Benin's President, Patrice Talon, declared this evening on national television that the situation in the country is "completely under control", following this morning's attempted coup, which authorities say they have prevented.
According to the official statement, a group of soldiers had attacked state institutions, but security forces immediately intervened and put an end to the attempt.
"I want to assure you that the situation is completely under control. I invite you to continue your activities calmly from tonight. Security and public order will be guaranteed throughout the national territory," Talon said.
He also stressed that "this betrayal will not go unpunished," warning that investigations and legal measures will continue.
