"Friendly with the enemy"/ Candidate for China's Foreign Minister, senior diplomat arrested immediately after returning from the US!

Chinese authorities have detained and interrogated Liu Jianchao, 61, director of the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party and one of the leading candidates for the post of Foreign Minister.

According to Wall Street Journal sources, officials from the Party's political police, one of the most powerful and feared institutions in the country, went to his apartment and took him to an unknown location, without giving any explanation.

In China, such cases are usually linked to allegations of corruption or “improper behavior,” as in 2023, when former minister Qin Gang was fired after just seven months in office for an extramarital affair. However, when it comes to figures close to President Xi Jinping, any investigation remains top secret.

Liu, born near Changchun in northeastern China, has built a long diplomatic career, known for his commitment to foreign policy and excellent command of English.

He has also served in the Party's anti-corruption office, a structure that has cracked down on dozens of senior officials over the past decade.

According to Corriere della Sera, Liu disappeared from the public scene in July, shortly after a visit to the United States, at a time when relations between Beijing and Washington are at their lowest point in decades.

He was seen in the US as a figure open to dialogue and was often considered the "next shadow secretary of state."

His frequent contact with Western politicians and businessmen, as well as the image of an independent and active diplomat, may have been interpreted in Beijing as personal ambition, a serious mistake in a system where every initiative must come from the top.

In the current climate of strategic clash between the world's two greatest powers, this perception may have been enough to label Liu as a "friend of the enemy," opening the door for political police intervention.
