Student detained, terrorist attack prevented in Poland

Polish security services have detained a student suspected of preparing a terrorist attack, special services spokesman Jacek Dobrzynski announced on Tuesday.

The suspect, Mateusz W, a student at the Catholic University of Lublin, is suspected of planning to carry out an explosives attack and join a terrorist organization. According to authorities, his goal was to intimidate many people and support the activities of the Islamic State.

“During the investigation, officers of the Internal Security Agency confiscated data carriers and items related to Islam,” Dobrzynski said on the X platform. He added that Mateusz W had taken steps to establish contacts with the terrorist organization and seek support for carrying out the attack.

The prosecution has filed charges of “taking preparatory actions to carry out a terrorist attack, which could have resulted in the death or serious injury of many people.” Officials have not disclosed the city where the attack was planned to avoid panic, but Dobrzynski stressed that he had targeted a city during the Christmas market.

The suspect was arrested in his apartment in Lublin, eastern Poland, in November. Investigations are ongoing and authorities are looking into his possible links to extremist groups abroad.
