"Stop the killing of children" / UEFA 'breaks the silence' at the Super Cup, a strong message from the field about the conflict that is shaking the world
A strong message was displayed before the UEFA Super Cup match, PSG-Tottenham, to raise awareness about the killing of children in Gaza. In a rare act, the footballers and the children accompanying them on the pitch held a banner with the clear message:
“STOP KILLING CHILDREN. STOP KILLING CIVILIANS.”
This unprecedented move for an event of this level, where politics rarely openly mixes with sports, was welcomed by the public, while immediately sparking debate on social media about what many consider a coded message directed at a specific conflict - where civilians, especially children, have suffered the most severe consequences.
Although UEFA did not directly mention any country or party involved, the timing and content of the message have raised strong suspicions that it is related to the current situation in the Middle East – more specifically, to the ongoing offensive in Gaza and the loss of innocent lives.
The slogan “STOP KILLING CHILDREN”, placed at the heart of an international sporting event, sends a clear message to the world from an institution that usually avoids direct political positions. The move comes at a time when pressure on international organizations to condemn violence against civilians has increased significantly.
Was this a message to Israel? UEFA does not say so in words. But voices in the stadium and on social media seem to read it that way.
