Panic in Cologne! Authorities discover 3 World War II bombs in the city center, over 20 thousand residents evacuated

At least 20,000 people were evacuated from the center of Cologne, western Germany, on Monday, where three unexploded World War II-era bombs discovered in the city center are expected to be defused later in the day. The city's mayor said it was the "most important operation" of its kind in the city since the end of World War II.
The three American-made bombs discovered during Monday's operations, two of which weighed 1,000 kilograms and the third 500 kilograms, carry a detonator that is activated upon impact.
The bomb disposal service in Düsseldorf has been tasked with defusing the bombs. In addition to residents, the evacuation order also includes a hospital, two nursing homes, a train station, several businesses and many restaurants and hotels, as well as nine schools and kindergartens, Cologne's city hall said in a statement.
World War II may have ended 80 years ago, but the ground in German cities remains littered with unexploded bombs, which are often discovered during construction work.
In 2017, the discovery of a massive 1.4-ton bomb in Frankfurt led to the evacuation of 65,000 people. In December 2021, a bomb exploded at a construction site near Munich station, injuring four people and disrupting train traffic.
