The Hajj pilgrimage, thousands of Muslims fill Mecca

Thousands of Muslim worshipers arrived in the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia to take part in the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage.

Dressed in white robes, with some carrying umbrellas against the scorching desert sun, Muslims walked in a circle around the Kaaba, the sacred building at the center of Mecca's Grand Mosque.

The Hajj pilgrimage is considered a religious duty that every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it should perform at least once in their lifetime.

Considered the home of Islam's holiest sites, Saudi Arabia considers itself the protector of this religion and takes responsibility for maintaining a peaceful Hajj season, when Muslims from different sects gather at the same place and time.
