French presidency reacts to woman's "slap" at President Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron's office has reacted for the first time after the incident that occurred aboard the presidential plane, where First Lady Brigitte Macron was filmed pushing and hitting the French president.
The French presidency attempted to "minimize" the incident through an Élysée official who said it was a moment of intimacy between the couple. The official denied that there was any argument between the couple, who have been married since 2007.
"It was a moment when the president and his wife were relaxing for the last time before leaving on their trip, laughing together," he said.
In the video that has been circulating on social media, Brigitte Macron is seen pushing the president before he got off the presidential plane on Sunday evening.
The video shows Macron taking a step back and realizing that the plane door was open, at which point he sportsmanlikely greets the people waiting for him at the Vietnam airport.
Macron's visit to Vietnam, the first by a French president in nearly a decade, is aimed at increasing France's influence in this former colony.
Vietnam, with a largely export-based economy, has had to make concessions to the United States in trade negotiations to avoid tariffs of up to 46%. However, Brussels has expressed concern that Vietnam's efforts to buy more American goods could harm European interests.
US President Donald Trump threatened on Friday to impose 50% tariffs on imports from the European Union, but softened his stance two days later, restoring the July 9 deadline for negotiations between Washington and Brussels.
