A plane with 15 people on board, including a Colombian lawmaker and a congressional candidate, crashed in a mountainous area in northern Colombia, near the border with Venezuela, with no survivors.

The plane, a Beechcraft 1900, belonged to the state-owned airline Satena and was on a daily flight from the border city of Cúcuta to Ocaña. Contact with the aircraft was lost about 12 minutes after takeoff, shortly after it disappeared from air traffic control radar.

According to official reports, there were 13 passengers and 2 crew members on board. Among the passengers were legislator Diógenes Quintero, 36, elected to represent the Catatumbo region in the House of Representatives, as well as Carlos Salcedo, a candidate for Congress in the March elections.

Authorities announced that teams of investigators are on the ground and, together with aviation experts, are working to determine the causes of the accident.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro and political party leaders expressed their condolences to the families of the victims, while initial investigations indicate that weather conditions and difficult terrain may have played a role in the accident, although there is no official cause yet.
