US/ Mayor of New Jersey's largest city arrested

Newark Mayor and New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Ras Baraka was arrested Friday afternoon during a protest near an immigration detention center, raising political and legal tensions in one of the most populous US states.

According to Politico reports, the arrest took place at the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, where protesters, including three members of Congress, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIver, requested access to tour the facility and examine the conditions in which immigrants are held.

The chaotic scene in the center's parking lot was followed by a verbal and physical confrontation between protesters and federal agents.

Ras Baraka, who had entered the interior of the center without official permission, was warned several times by the authorities to withdraw.

Despite this, he refused to leave, which led to his arrest by National Security agents.

Federal officials have not yet provided precise information on the legal status of the arrest, while Baraka's whereabouts remain unclear.

In a statement on the X platform, Alina Khaba, an advisor to President Donald Trump and also the Attorney General of New Jersey, confirmed Baraka's arrest and added:

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka trespassed and ignored multiple warnings from Homeland Security agents to leave the ICE detention center.

He chose to willfully ignore the law. This will not be tolerated in this country. No one is above the law, ” Khaba wrote.
