Residents of Baghdad and Irbil in Iraq reported loud explosions and the activation of air defense systems on Saturday evening, which were trying to neutralize approaching missiles or drones.

According to the Associated Press , three Iraqi security officials said a rocket hit a helicopter landing pad inside the U.S. embassy compound in Baghdad.

Iraq's acting Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, described the attack as a "terrorist act" carried out by "uncontrolled groups," adding that he had ordered security forces and the army to identify the perpetrators responsible for the incident.

There are no reports of casualties so far. A US embassy spokesman declined to comment on the incident.

The attack took place in Baghdad's Green Zone, a heavily fortified area where government institutions and diplomatic missions are located. Although the area has often been the target of attacks in the past, this is the first incident reported this week since the start of US-Israeli air strikes against Iran.

Following the escalation of the conflict in the region, Iran and allied militias in Iraq have carried out dozens of attacks on US military bases and other targets in the country. There have also been reports of attacks on bases of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in northern Iraq.
