Italy is sending a navy frigate to defend Cyprus, days after a drone struck a British base on the island, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Saturday.

"To ensure the security of the European Union's borders, we are deploying an Italian frigate to Cyprus" in "an act of European solidarity, but above all prevention," Meloni said in her video message.

"But our position is very clear: Italy is not part of the conflict and has no intention of becoming one," he added.

The frigate 'Federico Martinengo', which is equipped with missiles and has more than 160 crew members, departed yesterday, Friday, afternoon from Taranto in southern Italy.

Meloni said Italy was holding "close talks" with the United Kingdom, France and Germany on how to "avoid a new escalation".
