Tragedy in the Italian Alps, avalanche kills 5 German climbers, only 2 survived!

Five German climbers were killed when they were swept away by an avalanche in the Italian Alps, local authorities said on Sunday (November 2).

The climbers had set off on Saturday to climb the Cima Vertana peak, in the Ortler mountain range, near the village of Solda. As they were approaching the summit, the avalanche caught them by surprise and swept them away.

The mass of snow and ice trapped two separate groups of climbers who were tied together by ropes. The bodies of two men and a woman were found on Saturday, while the bodies of two other victims – a father and his 17-year-old daughter – were found today. Two other climbers escaped without injury.

The Ortler mountain range, near the Swiss border, is a popular destination for experienced climbers and mountaineers, but conditions in the area are often unpredictable and dangerous.
