Trump proposes next census, aims to exclude illegal immigrants

Donald Trump expressed his intention for the US to proceed with a “new and extremely accurate census” and was quick to clarify the reasoning behind this initiative:
“People who are in our country illegally will not be included in the census.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump explained that the census will be based on information collected from the 2024 presidential election. The census is a constitutionally mandated count of all people in the United States every 10 years.

It was last conducted in 2020, but a full census has never been conducted in the middle of the decade, nor have non-US citizens ever been excluded from the count.

The census determines the number of seats each state gets in the House of Representatives, as well as the allocation of federal and state funds. Trump tried to include a citizenship question on the census in his first term, although the Supreme Court rejected the effort in 2019 on procedural grounds.

A 2020 Pew Research Center report showed that removing stateless citizens could cost many states seats in the House of Representatives, including the two largest, California and Texas.

Beyond that, conducting a mid-decade census is likely to present a number of legal and procedural challenges, especially since planning for the 2030 census has already begun.

It is unclear how the Trump administration could exclude illegal immigrants from registration or whether it would remove them from the redistricting process, which would also face legal hurdles.

The president's announcement comes as several states are embroiled in a redistricting battle. Trump has pushed Republican states, such as Texas, to redraw district boundaries to maintain control of the House of Representatives, saying Republicans "deserve" the seats.
