Murder of 5 journalists, Reuters journalist resigns

Canadian photojournalist Valerie Zink has resigned from the Reuters news agency after eight years as an associate, saying she can no longer work for an agency that justifies and enables Israel's systematic crackdown on journalists in Gaza.

“ I owe my colleagues in Palestine at least that much,” Zink said. She announced the decision in a post on her personal X account.

Zink, who has also worked for other prestigious media outlets such as the New York Times, Al Jazeera and various media outlets in North America, Europe and Asia, criticized Reuters' reporting, saying that the agency is complicit in the killing of 246 journalists by Israel since the start of the attack on Gaza in October 2023.

“ Reuters chose to publish Israel's completely unfounded claim that Al-Sharif was a Hamas operative, one of many lies that outlets like Reuters have meticulously repeated and given dignity to ,” Zink wrote.

The journalist emphasized that the Western media is directly responsible for creating the conditions for these events, citing Jeremy Scahill, who stated that the mainstream media, from the New York Times to Reuters, have served as "an outlet for Israeli propaganda," whitewashing war crimes, dehumanizing victims, and abandoning both their colleagues and their commitment to truthful and ethical reporting.

The journalist says, "I have valued the work I have brought to Reuters over the past eight years, but at this point I cannot imagine myself holding this press card without feeling nothing but shame and deep sorrow."

She said that the Western media, by “repeating Israel’s genocidal fictions without verifying whether they have any credibility” and abandoning basic journalistic responsibility, have enabled the killing of more journalists in Gaza over two years than in major global conflicts combined, while also contributing to the suffering of the population.

The new deaths of media personnel in Gaza bring the number of Palestinian journalists killed in Israeli attacks since October 2023 to 246. Meanwhile, Israel has killed more than 62,700 Palestinians in Gaza since the same period.
